Gum disease is a serious oral health condition that happens in stages. Early in the disease—the gingivitis stage—it is possible to eradicate it with the help of your Highgate Hill dentist.

However, it is no longer reversible when gingivitis advances to the bone. Regardless, treating advanced gum disease is important to prevent serious complications.

What Is Gum Disease?

The hallmark of gum disease is infections and inflammation in the bones and ligaments that support your teeth. In the gingivitis stage, infections and inflammation are contained in the soft tissues. But without treatment, gingivitis graduates to gum disease.

If you have gingivitis or gum disease, you might notice some or all of the following symptoms:

  • Red, irritated and pocketing gums
  • A longish tooth appearance and gums recede
  • Bleeding gums, especially when brushing your teeth
  • Bad breath that recurs even after brushing and flossing
  • Loose, mobile or shifting teeth

Sometimes, your symptoms are so subtle that you dismiss them as something else. So, talk to your dentist if you notice any oral health changes.

Risk factors for gum disease include but are not limited to:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Genetic history
  • Hormone changes
  • Lack of dental care
  • Smoking and tobacco use

It’s important to note that regular dental care allows your dentist to diagnose gingivitis early and eradicate it before it advances to full gum disease. This is true even if you have other risk factors. So, be sure to see your dentist on time for check-ups and dental cleans.
